We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a wine that has made some waves on the local market since its inception – Metafora 2018 by Gogu Winery. This is the winemaker’s flagship white blend and one of the most famous local wines – a blend of chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and feteasca alba grape varieties, where chardonnay forms the main body and structure, while feteasca alba and sauvignon blanc adds up-front richness, sweet fruits and herbaceous notes. The wine has been aged for 6 months in french oak barrels in order to gain more complexity and the much desired vanilla flavours. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

The nose is strong, filled mostly with green fruits and citrus flavours: green pear, fresh cut grass, white apple, lemon, quince, lime, kiwi, acacia blossom, gooseberry, white apricot, white grapefruit, wild pear, wild apple, meadow flowers and marguerite daisy.

Gustatory

The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and ripe tannins. It tastes crisp, zesty and lean, with a nuanced citrusy-mineral and even herbaceous profile. The wine has a bitter-seedy accent on the palate, with an expressive, a bit angular mouthfeel. Overall this is an elegant, well structured and quite complex blend, with a fair overall balance and a a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through – a fine wine indeed.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and, with a total of 90.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: this is a very fine and refreshing wine blend that has yet to reach the peak of its prime form – a wine that can age for another year in the bottle. It feels well balanced and complex, with a nuanced bitter-seedy palate – this is a wine that maybe lacks a bit of harmony, thus some additional bottle ageing is recommended. Due to its highlighted aromatics and pronounced angularity, we would suggest to pair this wine with creamy seafood dishes, like for example a lobster bisque soup or some oven roasted mahi mahi fillets, so that all those sharp edges in the wine will be able to cut through the smooth textures of the dish and make for a perfect pairing. Cheers!
