sauvignon blanc

We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a another wine with the label Made in MoldovaSauvignon Blanc 2018 by Novak Winery. This is a single varietal sauvignon blanc wine from Valul lui Traian wine growing region that is famous for its crisp and refreshing white wines. Sauvignon Blanc is a very old french grape variety and it translates from french as ‘wild white’. What makes it different from the other white varieties are its unique herbaceous flavors, like green bell pepper, gooseberry and fresh cut grass, these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines. But let’s not put too much emphasis on the theory side and, without further ado – on to the tasting!

Olfactory

The nose is strong, filled mostly with green and citrus fruits and some subtle herbaceous flavours: fresh cut grass, white apple, lemon, white pear, honeysuckle, elderflower, ripe gooseberry, currant leaf, wild pear, white apricot, white peach, nectarine, straw grass and some hints of candied pineapple.

Gustatory

The wine is dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and green tannins. It tastes lean, opulent and crisp, with a nuanced seedy-green accent. The wine has a quite zesty and a bit angular palate, with a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. Overall this is a light, fair and quite simple wine, with a fair overall balance, a wine that lacks a bit of structure and complexity.

The wine has a medium finish and a quite pleasing, lean and slightly green aftertaste.

This is definitely a fair wine of Moldova and, with a total of 89.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Conclusion: this is a very nice and refreshing wine that is already past its prime form – a wine that is not meant for long term bottle ageing, therefore drink it today or even better – yesterday. The wine is very light in body and therefore quite appealing and easy to enjoy, with some hints of classic sauvignon blanc aromatics, one can drink it stand alone as an aperitif or paired with light seafood, like for example oven baked mahi mahi or steamed mussels with white wine and lemon-garlic dressing. Enjoy!
