We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single-varietal merlot wine from the Valul lui Traian region – Motive Merlot 2017 by Vinaria din Vale. Merlot is usually regarded as the underdog to the highly priced cabernet sauvignon, but make no mistake here, merlot wine is first class – it is versatile, ripens earlier than cabernet sauvignon, responds well to oak ageing and can be grown in both, cool and warm climate. This particular wine has been aged in french oak and is part of the freshly released Motive wine line. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is fine example of a merlot wine that is still on the rise – firm, round and seedy, with a nuanced fruity-savory accent – a wine that can be enjoyed today or in the next 2 years. This is a quite appealing wine, mostly due to its slightly sweet profile, overwhelming acidity and a touch of alcoholic burnt on the mouthfeel. What this wine lacks today is some more character, a bit of finesse and definitely some elegance on the palate. Overall this is a nicely balanced merlot wine, as it feels supple, crisp and round, with a fine-tannic and grippy palate and a nuanced, bitter-seedy finale.
