We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a rosé wine that is relatively new on the local market – Rara Neagra Rose 2019 by Castel Mimí. This is a single-varietal rosé wine, made of only rara neagra grapes, which is quite unusual, as the rara neagra variety is still an unexplored land for many winemakers. Rosé wine is usually made using the saignee method, when the juice of a soon-to-be red wine is strained from its skins before it becomes too dark and too extracted, thus the winemaker has to remove the red grape skins (the source of the red pigment) when the wine reaches the perfect color. The trap here lies in the character and body of the resulting rosé wine, as the focus on color alone might compromise the taste and oftentimes the flavour of the wine. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and, with a total of 90.2 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a quite seedy, sweet and appealing rosé wine which is right there, at the summit of its peak form – refreshing and simple, with nuanced berry fruits – a wine that maybe lacks some more harmony and finesse on the palate. It should definitely be enjoyed cool, as once it warms up, the wine start to display it’s rough edges in the form of sharp acidity and overwhelming alcohol burnt that leads to a quite hot and burning aftertaste. Overall this is a fine rosé wine, one that should be enjoyed today rather than tonight or tomorrow. Cheers.
