Today we are going to review a wine that conquered our hearts from the first sight – Sauvignon Blanc 2019 by Alpha Estate. This is a single varietal sauvignon blanc wine from the Amyndeon plateau, situated in the North-Western Macedonia, where vines are grown at an altitude of 620-710 meters on sandy and sandy-clay soil over limestone with excellent drainage. Sauvignon Blanc itself is a very old french variety and it translates from french as ‘wild white‘. What makes it different from the other white varieties are its unique wild, herbaceous flavors of green bell pepper, gooseberry and fresh cut grass – these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines. But enough theory – that said, without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine sauvignon blanc wine, that is right there, at the summit of its prime form – a wine that can certainly age for another 6 or 9 months in the bottle. It tastes crisp, pleasantly seedy and refreshingly zesty, with a round and well structured body, mouth-watering acidity and just a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. The wine feels complex and slightly green, with an expressive citrusy-herbal profile and some hints of elegance somewhere in-between. The wine has been highly appreciated by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, which is no small feat for a wine from Greece. Overall this is a great sauvignon blanc wine that is very well balanced – a wine that will go very well with some fresh oysters or oven baked mahi-mahi fillets.
