Today we are going to review another single-varietal pinot noir wine, but this one comes from Banat in eastern Romania, more precisely from the vineyards of the Dealurile Silagiului area – Amadoc Pinot Noir 2018 by Thesaurus. Pinot Noir has reached a legendary status over the last decades and today it is the most sought-after red wine in the world. The grape itself is quite vulnerable, suffering from a multitude of diseases and its genetics make it highly susceptible to mutation. But despite all the difficulty to grow pinot noir, when treated with utmost care, it is capable of producing the very best expressions of terrior. This particular wine has been aged for 12 months in two different Burgundy oak barrels, and only seven of these barrels were made. The wine was named after Amadoc The 1st – one of the greatest kings of Dacia, the historic predecessor of nowadays Romania, while the word “amado” translates as God’s love from Latin. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very nice pinot noir wine: fruity-vegetal, seedy and slightly green – a wine that is still developing, thus one that requires 1 or 2 more years of bottle ageing. It tastes bitter, angular and slightly rough, with a mixture of red fruits and some pronounced herbaceousness in the foreground, supported by some subtle and delicate earthy-oaky flavours in the background. The wine feels off-balanced, with green tannins, well integrated acidity and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. This is a wine that in its current state lacks a bit of harmony and finesse on the palate, as it feels rough and tastes slightly bitter on the finale. All in all, this is a very typical pinot noir wine from a cool climate region: supple and delicate – a wine that has both, a distinctive personality and the footprint of the Banat terroir.
