Today we are going to review a wine that conquered our hearts from the first sip – Sauvignon Blanc 2018 by Crama Bauer. This is a single-varietal sauvignon blanc wine from Dealurile Olteniei vineyards in Romania. Sauvignon Blanc is a very old grape variety that makes crisp, dry, aromatic and herbaceous wines that are popular all over the world and its name translates from french as ‘wild white‘, which is in fact the essence of this variety – the wilderness. What makes it different from its peers are those unique herbaceous flavors, reminiscent of green bell pepper, currant leaf, gooseberry and fresh cut grass – all these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and with a total of 92.3 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very fine sauvignon blanc wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: refreshingly crisp, zesty and extremely appealing. It feels seedy, citrusy-fruity and fresh, with mouth-watering acidity and quite a touch of alcoholic warmth on the palate. The wine has a slightly-green palate and a fruity-herbaceous nose, with a pronounced seedy-crisp finale. Overall the wine tastes lean and nicely structured – a very refined sauvignon blanc wine indeed. We would recommend to drink this wine today, rather than tomorrow, in order to enjoy it before it hits the decline slope, as this is a true and, dare we say, classic sauvignon blanc wine that will do amazingly well on its own or paired with some fresh oysters. Cheers!
