We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a very special wine: a single-varietal pinot noir from the Dealu Mare region in the south of RomaniaVigneron Pinot Noir 2018 by Domeniile Franco-Române. Pinot Noir has reached a legendary status over the last decades and today it is the most sought-after red wine in the world. The grape itself is quite vulnerable, suffering from a multitude of diseases and its genetics make it highly susceptible to mutation. But despite all the difficulty to grow pinot noir, when treated with utmost care, it is capable of producing the very best expressions of terrior. This particular wine has been crafted in a pure Burgundy style, partially aged in oak barriques and signed by Burgundy oenologist – Denis Thomas. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine pinot noir wine: fruity-savory, seedy and slightly astringent – a wine that is still developing, thus one that requires up to 5 more years of bottle ageing. It tastes firm and grippy, with a mixture of red fruits and herbaceous notes in the foreground, supported by nuanced and at the same time delicate earthy-savory flavours in the background. The wine feels noble and a bit angular, with green and grippy tannins, crisp acidity and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel, which leads to a bitter-seedy finale. This is a wine that in its current state lacks a bit of harmony and finesse on the palate, with some sharp edges that will only round up with time spent in the bottle. All in all, this is a quite typical pinot noir wine from a warm climate, a wine that holds promises of future elegance and one that has a very good ageing potential, therefore it will definitely improve with time. Cheers!
