Tonight we are also going to review a wine blend from Moravia wine region in Czech RepublicPinot NoirMerlot Bergrus 2019 by Gala Winery. This wine is a blend between a classic Bordeaux variety (merlot) and a classic Bourgogne variety (pinot noir), where merlot forms the main body and structure, while pinot noir adds lushness to the final blend and brings up a bit of earthiness into the mix. This particular wine is made of grapes that are sourced from the Bergrus vineyard, in the Palava sub-region in the south of Moravia, and it has been aged for at least 12 months in new and used oak barrels in order to add more complexity to the wine, but at the same time, to preserve the purity of the fruit for each grape variety. Moravia is a cool growing area with a continental climate, therefore the wines are traditionally categorized as light to medium-bodied. Moravian soils were created on sea and freshwater sediments and loess, with predominantly limey soils in the environs of Palava. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine wine blend: fruity-earthy, crisp and seedy – a wine that is right there, at the peak of its prime form, yet one that can withstand another 2 years of bottle ageing. It feels noble, supple and austere, with overwhelming acidity and alcohol, seedy-green tannins and a pronounced bitterness on the mouthfeel. On the nose, the wine delivers underripe and ripe red fruits in the foreground, supported by a nuanced earthy background and a spicy-herbal layer in between. All in all, this is a very well structured wine and nicely balanced wine blend, with a medium+ body and a very pleasant tannic seediness on the palate – definitely a wine that has its own distinctive personality and the footprint of the Moravia terroir.
