Today we are also going to review a genuine Pouilly-Fumé wine from LoireArgile à Silex Pouilly-Fumé 2019 by Domaine Bouchié-Chatellier. This is a single-varietal sauvignon blanc wine, made from several parcels of the domaine’s best grapes, grown on calcareous soils. Domaine Bouchié-Chatellier is one the most outstanding producers in Pouilly-Fumé, situated in immediate proximity with the inimitable Didier Dagueneau, thus has vineyards are planted on the famous silex soils (flinty-rich clay) – hence the wine name: Argile à Silex. The domaine’s gently tended vines benefit from that high proportion of flint, which stores and reflects the heat during the day-night cycle, therefore delivering high natural, but vibrant acidity in the resulting wines. The levels of resulting ripeness as well as the incredibly rich flinty minerality imbues the wine with a delicious complexity that few others can match – this wine is a true masterpiece. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a fantastic sauvignon blanc wine, one that is still developing into the bottle: refreshingly crisp, lean and extremely appealing. It feels round and elegant, with mouth-watering acidity, well integrated alcohol level and a very nuanced, fruity-citrusy nose. The wine tastes lush and voluptuous, with a velvety finale and some subtle hints of minerality. All in all, this is one of the best sauvignon blanc wines we’ve tasted so far – well structured, noble and smooth, exactly what one would expect from a genuine Pouilly-Fumé. What makes this wine truly mind-blowing, is how it mixes almost to perfection the different flavour profiles: the green & sweet fruits, the citrus & tropical fruits and those mesmerizing woody-herbal notes in the background – simply amazing! This is a wine to remember.
