Today we are going to review a single-varietal cabernet sauvignon wine from the famous Villány region in the south of HungaryCabernet Sauvignon Barrique 2016 by Gere Attila Winery. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and regions and it is capable to produce full-bodied wines that can mature and develop for many years in the bottle. Another important aspect of the cabernet sauvignon variety is that it is a late-ripening grape, which means that it is best suited for warm climates, where it is capable to produce wines that can reach into realms of perfection. This particular wine is made from the grapes that were harvested from the Csillagvölgy vineyard in the famous Villány appellation, fermented in large wooden casks and aged in second and third use oak barriques for at least 16 months. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a great wine of Hungary and, with a total of 93.7 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is definitely one of the finest cabernet sauvignon wines we’ve tasted so far: firm, bold and ripe – a wine that is still developing into the bottle, thus one that needs a bit more time in the bottle (3 to 4 years should suffice) before it will hit its apogée. The wine feels slightly woody, but voluptuous and complex, with ripe & dried black fruits in the foreground, followed by a spicy & oaky background, supported by a very appealing, leathery-earthy layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers fine-grained tannins, overwhelming acidity and just a touch of alcoholic warmth towards the end, leading to a pleasant, seedy-crisp finale. All in all, this is a nicely balanced and well structured cabernet sauvignon wine that maybe lacks just a bit of harmony and finesse on the palate, otherwise one that displays highlighted varietal typicity and the much-desired, earthy hints of Villány terroir. Egészségére!
