We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a very intriguing sparkling wine from the Veneto region in Northern Italy – Il Vino dei Poeti Millesimato Brut 2020 by Bottega SpA. This is a blend of glera, chardonnay and pinot gris grape varieties that were grown on calcareous and clay soils and is produced using the non-traditional tank method developed by Martinotti (also called Martinotti Method or Méthode Charmat) – a style of wine that is growing in popularity with each passing season and for good reason. It is the same method that is used in the production of the famous Prosecco wines that usually have boisterous fruit and very light and refreshing palate. That said, without further ado, let’s move on straight to the tasting results.

Verdict: this is definitely a very fine sparkling wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: lean, supple and extremely appealing. It feels light, crisp and slightly sweet, with mouth-watering acidity and a very refreshing and lush mouthfeel. On the nose it delivers citrus and ripe sweet fruits in the foreground, with a nuanced yeasty-lactic background and a subtle herbal layer in between. The wine feels fair and simple and it has a quite pronounced sweetness on the palate, which makes it a real crowd-pleaser. The wine might lack some body and complexity, but it was not meant to be complex in any way – this is a light, fresh and easy to drink sparkling wine, not a genuine Champagne or Cava. All in all, this is a very nice and simple sparkling wine with very appealing aromatic profile and a pleasantly seedy, slightly sweet mouthfeel. Drink it now or in the next 3 to 6 months. Salute!
