Today we are going to review a very special wine, one that lingers in the shadow of its peers – Malagousia Single Vineyard 2020 by Ktima Gerovassiliou. This is a single-varietal malagousia wine from Greece, which is a quite recent discovery, which was saved from extinction due to the efforts of Vangelis Gerovassiliou and today a promising indigenous greek variety that is capable of making elegant and aromatic wines, rich in style, like a mix between Viognier and Chardonnay, with peach, lime, and orange blossom and lemon oil, all tied together with a soft, fruity finish. This particular wine has been vinified in a classic french style, with a part of the wine aged in french oak barrels, with maturation on fine lees with regular stirring in order to add more complexity and to gain structure and body, while the other part was kept in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and crispiness. That said, without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a fantastic and very aromatic malagousia wine that is right there, at the summit of its prime form – a wine that can certainly age for another 9 or 12 months in the bottle. It tastes crisp, round and creamy, with very refreshing, mouth-watering acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel. The wine feels well structured, voluptuous and nicely balanced, with a quite complex and rich body and a velvety-hot aftertaste. On the nose the wine delivers a mesmerizing plethora of floral and citrus notes in the foreground, supported by some very noble and elegant oaky-sweet hints in the background. All in all, this is a very expressive, elegant and velvety wine, made from an almost extinct grape variety. It will do great if paired with richly-flavoured seafood dishes, like for example some fresh oysters with lemon. Enjoy!
