Today we are going to review a single varietal malbec wine from the famous Mendoza region of ArgentinaPremium Malbec 2018 by Bodega Staphyle. Known for its plump, dark fruit flavors and smoky finish, malbec wines have been adored for centuries, especially by the royal houses of England and Russia. With elegant notes of plum, tobacco and hints of violets, malbec offers a great alternative to its higher priced siblings: merlot, cabernet sauvignon or syrah. Malbec originates in the famous Cahors region of France, however Argentina proved that there’s more to malbec than just value, as it can offer an unmatched complexity and elegance if produced in a new-world style, with a very nuanced fruity character. This particular wine has been aged for 8 months in oak barrels and is made of malbec grapes that are sourced from the vineyards planted in the area of Ugarteche and Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo (known as the first wine region of Argentina). That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine and delicate wine indeed: fruity-savory, velvety and quite rustic – a wine that is still developing, thus one that requires another 2 or 3 years of bottle ageing. It feels round, supple and voluptuous, with mouth-watering, fine-grained tannins and just a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel. This is a very appealing, crisp and slightly seedy wine that feel well balanced and nicely structured – a wine that has the typicity of malbec variety, with subtle hints of terroir, that is made in a clear, old-world style. On the nose the wine starts with a fruity-earthy foreground, delivering overripe and dried black fruits mixed with some very nuanced earthy notes, supported by a quite delicate, savory-spicy background. This is a wine that will pair well alongside meaty dishes that are rich in natural savouriness, like for example a pan-seared duck breast or a medium-rare venison steak. Cheers!
