We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are also going to review a very intriguing white wine from the Samburesti vineyards in southern Romania, a wine that we were eager to try for a very long time – Soare Blanc de Noir 2020 by Domaine Vinarte. This wine is made out of cabernet sauvignon grapes, which are black in color, therefore in order to produce a white wine from red grape varieties, the ‘Blanc de Noir‘ technique is applied, where the juice from the grapes is separated from the skins as soon as possible in order to avoid pigmentation of the grape must. The resulting wine is very similar to a regular white wine, because the pulp of the cabernet sauvignon berries is grey and as so, it has no color to be extracted. To put it more simply, red grapes are vinified using the white wines technique, with gentle pressing and with no maceration. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a gorgeous wine – one of the best we’ve tasted so far – a wine that is right there, at the peak of its form and one that should be enjoyed today, as it is not meant for long term ageing. It feels crisp, ripe and extremely appealing, with a nuanced fruity-citrusy profile and a pleasingly seedy finale. On the palate the wine delivers mouth-watering acidity and well integrated alcoholic level, which makes it taste elegant and plush. On the nose the wine starts with green and citrus fruits in the foreground, followed by a mesmerizing herbaceous layer right before those nuanced candy-tropical notes in the background. All in all, this is a wine with an excellent structure and a fine balance on the mouthfeel, which makes it feel fresh, rich and harmonious – a wine that will do nicely alongside any fresh seafood dishes.
