Today we are going to review a wine from Chile‘s famous Colchagua ValleySanta Tierra Cuvée 5 Reserva 2019 by Viña Casa Silva. Casa Silva was founded in 1997 when Mario Pablo Silva, the oldest son of the fifth generation and his father, Mario Silva, shared the dream of making wines under their own label. They have dedicated much of their time to recover the old family vineyards and acquired an extensive understanding of the terroir in the Colchagua Valley. Santa Tierra is one of the most famous wine lines of the winery, made up mainly of varietal wines, Cuvée 5 being an exception, as it is a blend of 5 different grape varieties: 35% cabernet sauvignon, 35% carmenère, 15% syrah, 10% pinot noir and 5% petit verdot. The wine is partially oaked, as 60% of the blend has been aged for 8 months in french oak barrels, with the remaining 40% aged in stainless steel tanks, in order to preserve the purity of the fruit aromas. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a nice wine of Chile and, with a total of 90.6 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a fair and delicate wine blend: fruity-savory, lean and supple – a wine that is quite youthful, as in its current state it tastes slightly tart and opulent. Still, our recommendation is to drink it sooner rather than later, as it does not hold any promises of an ageing potential – it is a wine meant to be enjoyed in the first 1 or 2 years after release. The wine feels plump and rustic, with overwhelming acidity, fine-grained tannins and a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel. On the nose it displays a pronounced earthy foreground, supported by a spicy background, with a layer of ripe red fruits in between the two. All in all, this is a fair and simple wine blend that in its current form lacks some structure and complexity on the palate. We would also like to mention that on the nose, the wine displayed initially some hints of volatile acidity, notes that then disappeared after several minutes of aeration in the glass. Cheers!
