We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a wine that we were eager to try for a very long time – Epic 2020 by Gramma. This wine is a blend of three grape varieties: feteasca alba (an old, indigenous romanian variety that dates back for almost two thousand years), sauvignon blanc (a very old grape variety that makes crisp, dry, aromatic and herbaceous wines) and aligoté (known as the ‘other white Burgundy’ grape, it makes very refreshing dry wines with floral and herbal notes and an almost lemony character), where feteasca alba forms the main body and structure of the wine, aligoté rounds up and smoothens the final blend, while sauvignon blanc adds up-front crispness and brings herbal notes to the foreground. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and with a total of 91.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very crisp, supple and lean wine blend – a wine that is right there, at the summit of its prime form, therefore drink it now or in the next 12 months, as there’s no need for further bottle ageing at this stage. It feels fresh, smooth and slightly green, with a nuanced fruity-citrusy profile and a slightly seedy finale. On the palate the wine delivers exuberant acidity and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel, which makes it feel hot and a bit austere. On the nose the wine delivers a mixture of ripe fruits (green fruits and citrus) and some nuanced floral notes in the foreground, followed by a subtle and very appealing herbal layer in the background. All in all, this is a nicely structured wine blend with a mesmerizing aromatic profile and a slightly angular palate – a wine that lacks a bit of harmony and finesse on the mouthfeel, yet one that will pair nicely with any seafood dishes, especially those with creamy accents, like for example lobster in tomato cream sauce or some creamy garlic baked oysters. Enjoy!
