Today we are going to review a very special and, dare we say, unique wine – a single-varietal cramposie aromata wine – Ceva Nou 2020 by Crama Bauer. The grapes are sourced from the famous Dragasani region in eastern Oltenia, while the grape variety is a scarcity even in Romania. Cramposie Aromata is a very rare grape variety, conceived at S.C.D.V.V. (Statiunea de Cercetare si Dezvoltare pentru Viticultura si Vinificatie) – a crossing between cramposie (a very old variety that dates back to pre-Roman Empire days, when the region between the Danube and the Carpathian Mountains was inhabited by the Dacians – it is one of the very few dacian varieties that have survived to present days) and a member of muscat family (muscat variety most probably originated in Ancient Greece, later adopted by the romans and spread throughout the Roman Empire – cultivated for at least two millennia in Romania), that combines the best of the two varieties: the acidity and freshness of cramposie and the intensity and aromatics of muscat. This particular wine has been macerated in contact with skins and seeds for 6 days, then aged on fine lees and produced in a limited edition of only 5340 bottles. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine cramposie aromata wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: refreshingly crisp, zesty and seedy-green. It feels fresh, citrusy-vegetal and light, with mouth-watering acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel. The wine has a medium- body and a green accent on the palate, with a pronounced crispy-green finale. The nose is dominated by citrus fruits and vegetal notes, with some subtle but very appealing floral hints in the background. Overall the wine feels lean, nicely balanced and well structured, with an extremely appealing palate – a wine that is very close in style to a cool climate sauvignon blanc, but with an additional layer of floral notes in the background. We would recommend to drink this wine today, as long as it’s still young and beautiful, in order to enjoy it at its finest, as this is a rare find – a wine that will pair amazingly well with any citrus-based salads. Just get one and enjoy it!
