We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a single-varietal sauvignon blanc wine from the relatively cool Codru region of Moldova – Domeniile Vorniceni Sauvignon Blanc Private Estate 2020 by Divus Winery. Sauvignon Blanc is a very old grape variety that makes crisp, dry, aromatic and herbaceous wines that are popular all over the world and its name translates from french as ‘wild white‘, which is in fact the essence of this variety – the wilderness. What makes it different from its peers are those unique herbaceous flavors, reminiscent of green bell pepper, currant leaf, gooseberry and fresh cut grass – all these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and with a total of 91.3 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very appealing sauvignon blanc wine: refreshingly crisp and zingy, with a nuanced, citrusy-herbaceous profile and a zesty finish. The wine is right there, at the peak of its prime, therefore we would recommend to drink it today rather than tomorrow, while it’s still young and fresh. On the nose the wine delivers slightly underripe green fruits and citrusy notes in the foreground, followed by a quite nuanced, herbaceous background. On the palate the wine feels light, lean and slightly opulent, with vibrant acidity and quite a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel. What this wine lacks, is a bit of finesse on the palate, as it tastes a hot and sharp, especially in the aftertaste. Overall this is a well structured and nicely balanced sauvignon blanc wine that will pair nicely with seafood dishes. Enjoy!
