Today we are going to perform a trip into the past and re-evaluate a wine that is rightly considered among the best red wines of RomaniaRed King Rezerva 2018 by Crama Ferdi. This is a single varietal cabernet sauvignon wine made of grapes that were sourced from the famous Dealu Mare region in Muntenia and aged for 20 months in oak barriques. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and regions and it can produce wines that are very high in tannins and acidity, wines that can mature and develop for many years in the bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon is also a late ripening grape variety, which means that it is best suited for warm climates, where it is capable to produce wines that can reach into realms of perfection. This particular wine is signed by Fernando Mihailescu and is produced in a very limited edition of only 880 bottles, microvinification at its finest – a wine that is meant for long-term bottle ageing. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results and find out how the wine has evolved since our last review.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Romania and, with a total of 92.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Verdict: this is a quite expressive, muscular and bold cabernet sauvignon wine, with a firm and extracted palate. The wine is still developing, therefore we would recommend to give it another 3 to 5 more years of bottle ageing, in order to allow it to develop further complexity and round up its sharp edges. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of overripe and dried black fruits in the foreground, followed by a spicy-oaky background and a subtle earthy layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers well integrated acidity, rough but firm tannins and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel, leading to a bitter-seedy aftertaste. All in all, this is a quite grippy, tannic and slightly angular wine that lacks some harmony and finesse on the palate, as it feels slightly rough and even a bit sharp. Our recommendation is to pair it with peppercorn-crusted steaks or any grilled meats. Cheers!
