Today we are going to perform another trip into the past and re-evaluate a wine that is rightly considered among the best red wines of Moldova – King Cab 2018 by Mezalimpe. This is a single varietal cabernet sauvignon wine that comes from the famous Stefan-Voda region in the south of Moldova, made of grapes that were harvested from 50-years old vines from the Rascaieti area and aged for 18 months in french oak barriques. Cabernet Sauvignon is grown all over the world in a wide range of climates and regions and it can produce wines that are very high in tannins and acidity, wines that can mature and develop for many years in the bottle. Cabernet Sauvignon is also a late ripening grape variety, which means that it is best suited for warm climates, where it is capable to produce wines that can reach into realms of perfection. This particular wine is signed by Anatolie Iurco and produced in a limited edition of only 5400 bottles. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results and find out how the wine has evolved since our last review.

96x96This is definitely a great wine of Moldova and, with a total of 93.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Check our complete database on the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines that we have tasted and reviewed or go to the about us page and find out more about our exquisite rating system.

Verdict: this is a quite rich, firm and bold cabernet sauvignon wine that fells expressive and extracted on the palate. The wine is still developing, therefore we would recommend to give it another 3 to 4 more years of bottle ageing, in order to allow it to develop further complexity. On the nose the wine displays a mixture of overripe and jammy black fruits in the foreground, supported by a very nuanced, spicy-oaky background. On the palate the wine delivers exuberant acidity ripe and grippy tannins and a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, ending with a crisp and seedy aftertaste. All in all, this is a well structured and complex wine that is vinified in a clear-cut, new-world style – a wine that is lacking a bit of finesse and elegance on the palate. Our recommendation is to pair it with barbequed or grilled meats, as the wine can definitely handle a bit of spiciness and smokiness. Cheers!
