We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are also going to review another wine that has gained a legendary status over the years – Rosu de Purcari 2017 by Purcari. This is in fact one of the winemaker’s flagship wines – a blend of cabernet sauvignon (50%), merlot (35%) and malbec (15%) grape varieties, where cabernet sauvignon forms the wine’s main body and structure, malbec adds cherry fruit flavors and a more refined mid-palate, whereas merlot rounds up the final blend and delivers a smooth and lush finish. The wine is vinified in a classic Bordeaux-style, produced using traditional methods, only from grapes that were sourced from the Stefan Voda IGP, aged for 18 months in 225L french oak barriques – a wine that is still considered as a reference points for many consumers and winemakers alike. But enough theory, that said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a great wine of Moldova and, with a total of 93.0 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a round, supple and voluptuous wine blend, with a plump palate and a very nuanced, fruity-savory nose. The wine is still developing, therefore we would recommend to give it another 2 or 3 years of bottle ageing, in order to allow it to reach its full potential. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of ripe red fruits and some very nuanced savory notes in the foreground, followed by a spicy and slightly oaky background and a subtle earthy layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers crisp acidity, fine-grained tannins and just a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which nicely evolves into a very appealing seedy-crisp aftertaste. All in all, this is a very fine and well structured wine blend that feels noble and even elegant in some way – a wine that in its current state lacks just a bit of finesse on the palate. This is definitely a wine that has both, its own distinctive personality and the footprint of the Purcari terroir. For the best food & wine experience, we would recommend to pair it with naturally-flavoured meats, like for example a Tournedos Rossini and remember that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. Cheers!
