Grasa de Cotnari is a very old romanian variety, cultivated from ancient times in western Moldova and responsible for the once-famous sweet wines of Cotnari. It is a drought-sensitive variety, with medium resistance to frost, low resistance to powdery mildew and particularly sensitive to grey rot fungus. It can be vinified in a the whole range of wine styles, from dry and semi-dry, to sweet and even noble rot sweet wines. This wine is part of the Colocviu wine range that is made only using romanian indigenous grape varieties. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a fine grasa de cotnari wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: refreshing, round and light. It feels lean and supple, with crisp acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth showing through on the mouthfeel. The wine has a medium- body and a meadowy-herbaceous accent, both on the nose and on the palate. The nose is a mixture of ripe yellow fruits and herbal notes in the foreground, followed by subtle floral hints in the background. Overall this is a nicely structured and well balanced wine with an appealingly-seedy finish. We would recommend to drink this wine today, as long as it’s still young and beautiful in order to enjoy it at its finest and pair it with pear and arugula salad with blue cheese. Cheers!
