We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are also going to review another single-varietal, indigenous romanian wine, but this time from the famous Dragasani region in Oltenia Cramposie Selectionata 2020 by Avincis. Cramposie Selectionata (also known as Carloganca) is a very old grape variety that dates back to pre-Roman Empire days, when the region between the Danube river and the Carpathian Mountains was inhabited by the Dacians – it is one of the very few dacian varieties that have survived to present days. Being an autosterile variety (whose flowers cannot bear fruit by their own pollen), it used to be cultivated alongside the Gordan variety, which was a good natural pollinator. To eliminate the phenomenon of sterility in Cramposie, a group of researchers from Dragasani, led by Doctor Mircea Marculescu, created the Cramposie Selectionata variety by direct sexed hybridization between Cramposie and Gordan varieties. The grapes for this particular wine were sourced from Vila Dobrusa vineyards. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a fine cramposie selectionata wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: lean, supple and crisp. It feels fresh, citrusy-herbaceous and slightly bitter, with nuanced acidity and quite a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel. The wine has a medium- body and a green phenolic accent on the palate, all of which leads to a pronounced bitter-crisp aftertaste. On the nose the wine delivers ripe green & citrus fruits in the foreground, supported by a very nuanced and appealing herbaceous background. All in all, this is a nicely structured and well balanced cramposie selectionata wine that maybe lacks just a bit of finesse on the palate. Our recommendation is to drink this wine today, as long as it is still young and beautiful in order to enjoy it at its finest, as this is a fine wine indeed. Cheers!
