Today we are going to review a single varietal tamaioasa romaneasca wine from eastern Romania, more precisely from the Cotnari vineyards in MoldovaColocviu la Roma Tamaioasa Romaneasca 2020 by Casa de Vinuri Cotnari. Tamaioasa Romaneasca (also known as Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Muscat of Alexandria) is a branch variety of the muscat family – a variety of grapes that are very sensitive to frost, drought, excess of moisture, susceptible to powdery mildew and vulnerable to blight and botrytis. Muscat is believed to originate from the Ancient Greece and is cultivated for at least 2000 years in Romania under various names (Muscat Frontignan, Busuioaca de Moldova, Tamaioasa Alba de Dragasani, Rumanische Weihrauchtraube). This wine is also part of the Colocviu wine range, that is made only using romanian indigenous grape varieties in order to highlight the beauty of lesser known grape varieties. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a fine tamaioasa romaneasca wine that is right there, at the peak of its form: crisp, round and light. It feels lean and supple, with crisp acidity and a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel. The wine has a medium- body and a pronounced floral accent, both on the nose and on the palate. The nose provides a mixture of ripe yellow & tropical fruits in the foreground, followed by mesmerizing floral notes in the background. Overall this is a wide, flat and opulent wine that lacks structure and complexity on the palate, nonetheless, a very fragrant tamaioasa romaneasca wine. We would recommend to drink it today, as long as it’s still young and beautiful in order to enjoy it at its finest, as we believe that this is a wine which will pair lovely with any light dessert dishes, like for example panna cotta or crème brulée. Enjoy!
