We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a genuine rosé wine from the famous Provence region of southern FranceSignature 2021 by Les Quatre Tours. This rosé wine is a traditional, multi-varietal blend made out of four red grape varieties (40% syrah, 30% grenache, 10% cinsault and 10% cabernet sauvignon) and one white grape variety (10% rolle, which is the french name of the famous vermentino grape variety that originates from Sardinia), with each variety vinified separately before blending them into the famous Signature cuvée. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation touching the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. Les Quatre Tours is situated in the heart of Provence surrounded by olive trees and pinewoods, at the foot of the beautiful Mont Saint Victoire, therefore it falls under the Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence AOP. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of France and, with a total of 91.0 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is an expressive, crisp yet rough rosé wine that is still in its development phase, therefore our recommendation is to either drink it today or within the next 12 months, as there’s no need for long-term bottle ageing. The wine feels firm, slightly hot and a bit green, delivering nuanced acidity and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth on the mouthfeel, which leads to a crisp and rough finale. On the nose the displays a mixture of ripe and overripe berry fruits in the foreground, followed by ripe red fruits in the background. All in all, this is a sharp, angular and coarse rosé wine that feels slightly off the balance – a wine that lacks harmony and finesse on the palate. We believe it might pair nicely with red fish, like for example an oven baked salmon. Sante!
