Today we are going to review a wine that is considered among the best single-varietal feteasca neagra wines from Moldova – Feteasca Neagra 2018 by Domeniile Pripa. Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous romanian variety that has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia and today, this is the most famous red variety in Romania. Wines made from feteasca neagra grapes are usually fruit-forward, complex and structured, wines that often are compared to merlot and cabernet franc, mostly due to their body, robust tannins and elegant textures. There is a rising demand for feteasca neagra wines on the regional as well as on the international markets and many wine experts consider this variety to be the visit card of romanian wines. This particular wine comes from the famous Purcari village in the Stefan-Voda region in the south of Moldova and has been aged only in moldovan oak barriques. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a great wine of Moldova and, with a total of 93.4 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a very crisp and firm feteasca neagra wine with a fruity-expressive nose and a slightly tart mouthfeel – a wine that is still developing, thus one that requires at least 3 to 5 more years of bottle ageing before it will reach the peak of its form. It feels bitter-seedy, muscular and a bit angular, with a nuanced, fruity-oaky foreground, followed by a spicy background and a subtle, earthy layer in between. On the palate the wine delivers exuberant acidity, ripe tannins and an overwhelming alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, all of which leads to a youthful, tart and seedy aftertaste. All in all, this is a quite bold, new-world styled feteasca neagra wine, that in its current lacks some harmony and finesse on the palate. We would recommend to pair it with spicy or barbequed meats, in order to counter-balance all the rough edges in the wine with the spiciness of the meats and to highlight the expressivity provided by those fruity-oaky flavours in the wine with the grilled and charred notes of the dish. Cheers!
