Today we are going to review another quite intriguing or, dare we say, legendary wine, but this time one from the famous Dealu Mare region in MunteniaLady Black – Legend 2019 by Crama Ferdi. Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous romanian variety that has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia and today, this is the most famous red variety in Romania. Wines made from feteasca neagra grapes are usually fruit-forward, complex and structured, wines that quite often are compared to merlot and cabernet franc, mostly due to their body, robust tannins and elegant textures. There is a rising demand for feteasca neagra wines both, on the local market as well as on the international markets and many experts name this variety as the visit card of romanian wines. This particular wine is part of the ‘Legend’ series and is a classic example of modern microvinification, aged for 20 months oak barrels and produced in a very limited edition of only 990 bottles, thus it is a rarity even in Romania. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very rich, firm and expressive feteasca neagra wine, with a ripe and grippy mouthfeel. The wine is still in its development phase, therefore it requires at least 3 or 4 more years of bottle ageing in order to round up its sharp edges and get closer to its true potential. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of overripe black fruits and pronounced oaky-derived notes in the foreground, followed by some subtle, spicy hints in the background. On the palate the wine delivers crisp acidity, ripe and firm tannins and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into a very seedy aftertaste. All in all, this is an extracted, bold and oaky feteasca neagra, with a clear-cut, new world style and a nuanced fruity-jammy profile – a wine with a very good ageing potential that in its current state lacks harmony and finesse on the palate. Taking into account the wine’s oaky character and overripe flavour profile, we would recommend to pair it with spicy or grilled meats with blackberry or bourbon sauce, like for example a rosemary & garlic flank steak or a skillet bourbon steak. Enjoy!
