Today we are going to review a single-varietal malbec rosé wine from MoldovaBravoure Malbec Rosé 2021 by Chateau Cristi. This rosé wine was made by using the direct pressing method, which means that as soon as the grapes arrive in the cellar, they are pressed (whole bunch) in order to extract the free-run must (the most delicate one). The goal of the direct pressing is to obtain the free run must as quickly as possible and to obtain the best aromas without having to extract too much of the color. The rosé wines obtained by direct pressing will have a very pale color. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation touching the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Moldova and, with a total of 91.6 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a crisp, heady and firm rosé wine that is right there, at the summit of its prime form, therefore our recommendation is to drink it now, as there’s no need for further bottle ageing at this stage. It feels bold and muscular, with a nuanced fruit-forward profile and a hot finale. On the palate the wine delivers crisp acidity and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which makes the wine taste slightly rough and a bit aggressive for a rosé. On the nose the wine delivers a mixture of ripe red fruits, berry fruits and stone fruits in the foreground, followed by a very subtle, candy-sweet layer in the background. All in all, this is a delicious rosé wine that lacks just a bit of harmony and finesse on the palate. We believe this is a wine that will pair nicely with oven baked salmon or parmesan roasted shrimp. Cheers!
