We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a very special wine that took over our hearts from the very first sip, a wine that took the local market by storm from day one – Calliope 2021 by DiWinety. This is a single varietal feteasca regala wine, which is one of the most famous and sought after grape variety in both, Romania and Moldova. Feteasca Regala (which translates as ‘royal maiden‘) has been discovered near Sighisoara (Transylvania) in 1920 and is a grape variety that has been obtained by crossing of feteasca alba and grasa de cotnari indigenous grape varieties. It produces crisp, dry and very aromatic white wines. The grapes for this particular wine are sourced from the Codru wine region, but what makes this wine really unique, is the fact that it has been aged for 8 months in 500-liters hybrid barrels, made out of pine tree and acacia wood staves. Needless to mention that this wine has been produced in a very limited edition of only 500 bottles (ours was the bottle #404) and sold out immediately after its market release. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine feteasca regala wine that feels refreshingly crisp, with an expressive nose and a citrusy-steely palate. The wine is still developing but very close to its peak form, thus we would recommend to drink it now or within the next year in order to enjoy it at its finest, as we firmly believe that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of ripe green fruits and citrus in the foreground, followed by a sweet and floral background. On the palate the wine delivers exuberant acidity, a touch of green tannins and well integrated alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into a velvety-crisp aftertaste. All in all, this is a quite supple, lean and zesty feteasca regala wine with a very appealing mouthfeel – a wine that will pair nicely with mahi mahi fillets or a green pear and meyer lemon salad. Enjoy!
