Today we are going to review a very special wine blend from the relatively cool, Codru region in central Moldova – Domeniile Vorniceni Trei Mândre 2021 by Divus Winery. This wine is an indigenous blend of three aromatic grape varieties: viorica, floricica and feteasca regala. Viorica is a light-skinned white grape variety that is little known outside of Moldova, yet it was long considered the visit card of Moldova’s white wines. It is distinguished by an expressive and intense aromatic bouquet, reminiscent of wild flowers and sweet fruits. Floricica is a relatively new grape variety, created by crossing of the rhein riesling and datie de sen valie varieties and homologated in 2007 at the National Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking. It has increased resistance to fungal diseases, grey rot and is resistant to spring frosts. Feteasca Regala (which translates as ‘royal maiden‘) has been discovered near Sighisoara (Transylvania) in 1920 and is a grape variety that has been obtained by crossing of feteasca alba and grasa de cotnari varieties. It produces crisp, dry and very aromatic white wines. But enough theory, without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very lean, supple and slightly opulent wine blend with a very expressive, fruity-floral profile and a crisp mouthfeel. The wine is right there, at the peak of its prime form, therefore we would recommend to drink it today rather than tomorrow, while it’s still young and fresh, as it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine exhibits a nuanced floral foreground, followed by ripe and overripe sweet fruits and citrus in the background. On the palate the wine feels wide and ample, with overwhelming acidity and quite a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to a crispy and hot aftertaste. What this wine lacks today is a bit of finesse and harmony on the palate. All in all, this is a nicely structured wine blend that will appeal to the taste of those who are vulnerable to these mesmerizing floral flavours, especially if paired with some mahi mahi fillets or arugula and pear salads. Get one and enjoy. Cheers!
