Today we are going to review a single-varietal falanghina wine from Taburno, located in the Campania region of ItalyTaburno Falanghina del Sannio 2021 by Cantine Iorio. Falanghina is Campania’s signature white grape variety, making refreshingly-sturdy wines. It takes its name from the italian “falanga” – the stake supporting the vines. Falanghina grape variety was almost abandoned, but after its vines survived the phylloxera, it gained prominence and went through a period of renaissance and is now widely cultivated in Campania wine growing area. Falanghina grape is also widely used in the production of sparkling wines. The resulting wines tend to be straw-coloured, with a nuanced fruity nose and a velvety-delicate palate. In the last few years, oak-aged falanghina wines have started to appear on the market, making it clear that this variety does not lack in complexity. This particular wine has been aged for 4 months in steel tanks and is made out of grapes that were sourced form vines planted on limestone and clay-rich soil at 300-meters altitude. That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a very fine falanghina wine: refreshingly crisp, zingy, with a citrusy-expressive nose and a steely palate. The wine is right there, at the peak of its form, therefore we would recommend to drink it today rather than tomorrow, as we firmly believe that it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine showcases a mixture of ripe green, citrus and tropical fruits in the foreground, followed by a herbal background and a subtle mineral layer in between. On the palate the wine delivers mouth-watering acidity and just a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into an extremely appealing and crisp aftertaste. All in all, this is a very supple, lean and well structured falanghina wine, with a clear cut, italian stamp on it – a wine that will pair nicely with mahi mahi fillets or a pear and lemon salad. Enjoy!
