Today we are are going to review a single-varietal feteasca neagra wine from the famous Stefan Voda wine region of MoldovaV(ia) Feteasca Neagra 2019 by Te Wā Wines. Feteasca Neagra is an indigenous romanian variety that has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia and today, this is the most famous red variety in Romania. Wines made from feteasca neagra grapes are usually fruit-forward, complex and structured, wines that often are compared to merlot and cabernet franc, mostly due to their body, robust tannins and elegant textures. There is a rising demand for feteasca neagra wines on the regional as well as on the international markets and many wine experts consider this variety to be the visit card of romanian wines. In order to preserve the varietal characteristics of the feteasca neagra grapes, this wine has been handled with much care, with moderate use of oak during vinification and, as a result, this particular wine is stylistically different from all the other feteasca neagra wines of Moldova. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

Verdict: this is a gorgeous feteasca neagra wine and definitely one of the best we’ve tasted so far: plump, crisp and voluptuous, with a very expressive nose and a supple-lean palate. The wine is still in its development phase but very close to its prime form, therefore we would recommend to either drink it today or within the next 2-3 years, but make sure you don’t overdo it, as it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine displays a mixture of ripe and overripe, blue and black fruit notes in the foreground, supported by a subtle, spicy-oaky background and a delicate, savory-earthy layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers bright acidity, smooth, fine-grained tannins and just a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to an appealing, seedy-crisp aftertaste. All in all this is a rich, silky and well structured feteasca neagra wine, with an amazing harmony between all its elements, where nothing is showing off – a wine that is mixing elegance with finesse. We believe this amazing wine will pair lovely with delicate meats, rich in natural umami flavour, like for example a skillet steak with bourbon sauce or a peppercorn filet mignon steak. Enjoy!
