We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are also going to review a rosé wine from Spain‘s famous Ribera del Duero region – Roselito Ribera del Duero 2021 by Bodegas Antídoto. This wine is a blend of two grape varieties: one red grape variety, tempranillo (also known as tinto fino or tinto del país in the Ribera del Duero region), which forms 70% of the blend, and one white grape variety, albillo (used mainly to add perfume to the Ribera del Duero red and rosé wines), which forms the other 30% of the blend. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine, nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. This rosé wine is made out of grapes that were sourced from very old vines (30 to 100 years old) and has been vinified in a protective style, using whole bunches of the grapes and fermented in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures, with cold-resistant yeasts. That said, without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

96x96This is definitely a fine wine of Spain and, with a total of 92.7 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Verdict: this is a fresh, crisp and very appealing rosé wine, with a supple and round palate and a nuanced, fruity-rich nose. The wine is right there, at the peak of its form, and because it is not designed for long term ageing, we would suggest to drink it today rather than tomorrow, preferably within a year in order to enjoy it at its finest. On the nose the wine brings a mixture of ripe berry fruits and stone fruits notes in the foreground, supported by some subtle, forest fruits hints in the background. On the palate the wine delivers crisp acidity and just a touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which evolves into a refreshingly-crisp aftertaste. All in all, this is a light, ample and lean rosé wine, with a well structured palate and some hints of elegance – a perfect spring refresher and a real crowd-pleaser. We believe it will pair lovely with oven baked salmon or seared Ahi Tuna steak. Salud!
