Today we are going to review a single varietal sauvignon blanc wine from Valle de Aconcagua of Chile – Max Sauvignon Blanc Edición Aniversario 2021 by Errazuriz. Sauvignon Blanc is a very old grape variety that usually makes crisp, dry, aromatic and herbaceous wines, that are popular all over the world. Sauvignon Blanc translates from french as ‘wild white‘, which is the very essence of this grape variety – the wilderness within. What makes it different from its peers, are those unique herbaceous flavors, reminiscent of green bell pepper, currant leaf, gooseberry and fresh cut grass – all these flavors come from aromatic compounds called pyrazines. This particular wine is an anniversary edition, as the Errazuriz winery celebrates 150 years since its foundation, and is named in honor of the founder – Don Maximiano Errázuriz. The grapes for this wine has been sourced from the cool-climate, coastal vineyards in the Región de Aconcagua, planted on schist-rich soils, just north of the capital city Santiago. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean and early morning fogs make these vineyards ideal for producing cool-climate varietals wines, such as sauvignon blanc. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Verdict: this is a quite green, sharp and austere sauvignon blanc wine with a pronounced herbaceous nose and an angular palate. The wine is right there, at the peak of its prime form, therefore we would recommend to drink it today rather than tomorrow, as it is always better to drink a wine a year too soon than a day too late. On the nose the wine showcases a mixture of ripe green fruits and citrus fruits in the foreground, followed by a very nuanced, herbaceous background and a very subtle, floral layer in between the two. On the palate the wine delivers crisp acidity, some phenolic bitterness and an overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth that is showing through on the mouthfeel, which leads to a bitter-sharp and hot aftertaste. All in all, this a zesty, slightly rough and unbalanced sauvignon blanc wine, that in its current state lacks harmony and finesse on the palate. We believe it will pair nicely with an arugula & pear salad or an apple & walnuts salad. Enjoy!
