We will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss our reviews. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations.

Today we are going to review a genuine Valpolicella blend from the Veneto region in Northern ItalyAmarone della Valpolicella DOCG 2017 by Ampelio. This is a classic Amarone blend of three grape varieties: corvina, corvinone and rondinella, where corvina forms the wine’s main body and structure, corvinone is all about up-front richness, while rondinella builds a more refined mid-palate. In order to soften the tannins and add a layer of extra complexity to the final blend, and in order to preserve as much as possible the varietal typicity of the three indigenous grape varieties, the wine has been aged only in used oak barrels of different sizes. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

intensity: rich & leathery
fruit character: dehydrated

On the first nose, this wine unveils a delightful olfactory symphony, showcasing a pronounced dehydrated fruit character. The foreground is adorned with overripe red fruits, where notes of sun-dried cherries, dried cranberries, and dehydrated plums take center stage. A subtle interplay of leathery undertones adds a layer of sophistication, reminiscent of old leather and brown olive. As the aroma evolves, the background reveals an intricate dance of spice and herbs, with whispers of dried thyme, rosemary, anise and some hints of nutmeg, elevating the overall sensory experience. A layer of subtle savory hints gracefully linger, with notes of wormwood, dried herbs and a touch of dried tomato.

//Palate
sweetness: off dry | acidity: high | alcohol: high | tannin: high | balance: good
finish: medium+ | aftertaste: seedy

On the palate, this wine delivers a compelling fusion of dehydrated red fruits, with subtle notes of dried herbs and spice lingering in the background. The mouthfeel is characterized by crisp acidity, that imparts a refreshing liveliness to the overall palate. The tannins, both ripe and seedy, contribute to a well-structured and nicely textured tasting experience, offering a firm grip on the palate. An overwhelming touch of alcoholic warmth adds a heady element, enhancing the wine’s body and providing depth. The aftertaste, seedy-hot and enduring, leaves a lasting impression. This wine strikes a balance between astringency and structure, showcasing a slightly astringent interplay of fruity, herbal, and spicy elements.

//Verdict
maturity: in its prime | drink now – no reason for further ageing
verdict: fine | highly recommended | a wine of premium quality with good potential

All in all, in its current state, this wine presents itself as a terroir-driven Amarone with a character that leans towards firmness, seediness, and headiness, yet falls slightly short in finesse and richness, that many Valpolicella wines are famous for. This wine displays an intriguing interplay of dehydrated red fruits, dried herbs, and spice, offering glimpses of its genuine rustic nature. However, the overall impression is a bit unpolished, with a slightly angular and astringent palate. While the firm tannins and seedy aftertaste contribute to its structure, the wine lacks the finesse expected from a top-quality amarone.

Pairing: Judging by the wine’s complex and rich flavor profile, we would recommend to pair it with a rustic dish that would enhance the overall sensory experience. A grilled venison loin with juniper berries and blackberry-honey sauce would be an excellent choice. The wine’s firm structure aligns seamlessly with the gamey texture of venison, while the ripe and dried black fruit flavors add a layer of richness to the meat. The subtle spicy and earthy undertones in the wine will harmonize with the rich flavors of the sweet sauce, creating a delightful synergy. In the same key, the seedy aftertaste and crisp acidity of the wine will provide a refreshing contrast to the rich and tender venison, elevating the overall dining experience. Cheers!
