Today we are going to review a wine that has been released relatively recently on the market, which comes from the famous Stefan Voda region of MoldovaMerlot – Syrah 2021 by Vinaria Nobila. As its name suggests, this wine is a blend of two grape varieties: merlot and syrah, where merlot forms the wine’s main body and enriches the flavor profile with notes of red fruits, whereas syrah enhances the wine’s structure and adds more complexity to the final blend, thus forming a more dynamic finish. The wine is signed by the famous local oenologist Oleg Boboc and, in order to soften the tannins and add extra complexity to the final blend, it has been aged for 12 months in french and american oak barriques, both new and used. But enough with all that theory, that said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

//Visual
color: medium-deep garnet color

compound
//Olfactory

intensity: rich & fruity
fruit character: overripe

The nose opens with a burst of overripe red fruit aromas, reminiscent of redcurrants, cranberries, and plums. These primary fruit notes are complemented by subtle hints of oak, adding a touch of complexity with notes of toasted oakwood. In the background, delicate earthy notes emerge, hinting at pencil lead and black soil dust, which mingle with subtle spicy undertones of peppercorn and cloves.

//Palate
sweetness: dry | acidity: high | alcohol: high | tannin: high | balance: good
finish: medium+ | aftertaste: crisp & sharp

The palate unveils an explosion of overripe red and black fruit flavors, offering notes of overripe plums, dark cherries, and blackberries alongside hints of spice and nuanced woody undertones. The firm and slightly grippy tannins form a structured mouthfeel, while the tart acidity cuts through the richness and adds a touch of overwhelming freshness. A noticeable alcoholic warmth adds power and depth, without overpowering the overall balance. The finish is crisp and slightly sharp, leaving a lingering sensation of fruit and spice. This is a bold and expressive wine with a firm structure, making it perfect choice for those who enjoy a full-bodied and robust style.

//Verdict
maturity: developing | not worth ageing | drink now or within a year
verdict: nice | enjoyable & good | a well made wine that lacks elegance and finesse

This wine delivers a bold and fruit-forward profile with an abundance of overripe flavors and noticeable oak influence. While the nose is inviting and the palate offers a burst of juicy fruit, the wine’s firm, slightly angular tannins and noticeable alcoholic warmth create a somewhat disjointed mouthfeel. This wine is still quite young and might benefit from additional cellaring time, to allow the tannins to soften and integrate further, but there’s not much of the hope in that direction. Overall, this is a fruit-forward and oaky wine that shows some potential – a wine that in its current state lacks any form of harmony on the palate.

Pairing: Due to the wine’s bold character, seedy tannins and slightly high alcohol, it would be best to pair it with food that can stand up to its weight and richness. Consider pairing this wine with grilled red meats like burgers, lamb chops, or sausages. The smoky and savory flavors of the grilled meat will complement the overripe fruitiness of the wine, while the rich fat content will help to soften the firm tannins. In the same key, the wine’s overwhelming acidity will help to cut through the richness and fattiness of the food, creating a balanced and enjoyable tasting experience. Cheers!
