Today we are going to review a rosé wine from Moldova that, for many years, was considered a benchmark in its category – Rosé 2022 by Purcari. This wine is a blend of two grape varieties: cabernet sauvignon and merlot, where cabernet sauvignon forms the wine’s main body and structure, while merlot rounds up and smoothens the final blend. Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine, nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. The grapes for this wine were sourced from all over Moldova in order to deliver that irresistible expressiveness of the fruit, while at the same time, preserving that refreshing acidity that is sought after in any rosé wine. That said and without further ado, let’s take a look at the wine tasting results.

sight
//Visual
color: pale peach color
clarity: translucent salmon hues

compound
//Olfactory
intensity: pronounced & expressive
fruit character: ripe

On the nose, this rosé wine bursts forth with an abundance of ripe berry fruits aromas. The leading notes are a delightful medley of ripe cranberries, juicy goji berries and raspberries, with some hints of sweet notes akin to candy drops. Underneath all those expressive and vibrant fruits hides subtle whispers of citrus fruits, adding a touch of freshness and complexity to the overall aromatic profile.

//Palate
sweetness: dry | acidity: medium+ | alcohol: medium+ | tannin: low | balance: good
finish: medium+ | aftertaste: crisp & hot

While the fruit character impresses with its ripe and vibrant notes of berry fruits and red fruits, the palate falls short of expectations. The wine’s crisp acidity, although refreshing, is accompanied by a slight harshness and astringency from the seedy tannins, while a noticeable touch of alcoholic warmth lingers on the finish, creating a bit coarse and hot sensation. This results in a firm and somewhat austere mouthfeel, lacking the softness and elegance often desired in rosé wines.

//Verdict
maturity: in its prime | drink now or within the next 6 months
verdict: fine | highly recommended | a quite appealing wine

This rosé wine delivers an enticing bouquet of ripe berry fruits and subtle candy-like notes. The palate mirrors the vibrancy of the nose with its crisp acidity, that is accompanied by a touch of astringency and warmth from the alcohol, creating a slightly austere and somewhat angular mouthfeel. Overall, this is a crisp and quite firm rosé wine that leans towards boldness, lacking the finesse and elegance typically associated in this wine category. While it might not be the epitome of harmony and elegance, the wine’s vibrant fruit character and refreshing acidity could be appealing to those who enjoy a bolder style of rosé.

Pairing: While this rosé wine showcases an enticing bouquet and vibrant fruit character, its crisp acidity and slightly austere mouthfeel call for a dish that won’t be overwhelmed by the wine’s boldness. Baked salmon with a lemon dill sauce would be a great pairing suggestion. The richness of the salmon can stand up to the wine’s firm structure, while the lemon dill sauce would complement the wine’s crisp acidity and would add a touch of freshness. This pairing would allow the wine to shine, without clashing with the delicate flavors of the fish. Cheers!
