Tonight we are going to review a single-varietal riesling wine from the cool, Aiud region of RomaniaRR-21 Special Selection 2021 by Pivnita Savu. This is a hand-picked wine, made with grapes sourced from the vineyards in the Ciumbrud area in Transilvania. Riesling must be the world’s most misunderstood grape variety, as the resulting wines are unlike any others – light in alcohol, high in natural acidity, with the ability to transmit the terrior through its extract and unique aromas and, what makes it stand out from the crowd, riesling wines are capable of ageing for decades. Relative to other internationally grape varieties, riesling ripens quite early, so when planted in a hot or warm climate, its juice can be overripe and flabby, while in a cool climate it gets its the chance to stay on the vine late into the autumn, hence the german obsession with late harvest riesling wines. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

//Visual
color: medium-deep yellow color
clarity: bright lemon hues on the rim

compound
//Olfactory
intensity: rich & fruity-citrusy
fruit character: ripe

On the nose, the wine reveals a rich and ripe profile with a vibrant medley of yellow fruits, reminiscent of peach, quince, and a touch of apricots, interwoven with refreshing hints of lemon and pomelo. Beneath this initial burst of fruit lies a delicate layer of floral notes, adding a touch of elegance and complexity to the overall aromatic profile.

//Palate
sweetness: dry | acidity: high | alcohol: high | tannin: low | balance: good
finish: medium | aftertaste: crisp

While the nose initially entices with its ripe fruit character, the palate presents a contrasting experience. Dominated by flavors of underripe citrus fruits, gooseberries and green apples, the high acidity creates a sharp and austere mouthfeel. This exuberance is further accentuated by a touch of alcoholic warmth, leading to a very crisp and slightly tart aftertaste. The palate is lean and supple, lacking the expected harmony and balance often desired in a high quality riesling wine.

//Verdict
maturity: developing | drink now or within the next 2 years
verdict: nice | enjoyable & good | a well made wine that lacks finesse

All in all, the palate falls short of the initial promises, dominated by flavors of underripe citrus and green apples, the exuberant acidity creates a sharp and somewhat one-dimensional experience. The lean and supple mouthfeel, coupled with a touch of alcoholic warmth, accentuates the wine’s crispness to the point of being tart. Overall, this is a riesling wine that lacks the complexity and varietal character typically associated with this grape variety, thus failing to capture the full potential of the riesling grape variety.

96x96This is definitely a nice wine of Romania and with a total of 91.9 points scored, this wine is right there, among the best wines we’ve rated so far. Pairing: Based on the wine’s exuberant acidity and lean palate, we believe that fish tacos would be a perfect pairing, as the wine’s tartness might overpower the delicate flavors of many dishes. The acidity in the wine would help cut through the richness of the fattiness of the fish, while the citrus and green apple notes might find some harmony with the tangy flavors of the salsa. It’s important to note that this is not a classic pairing, and other options might offer a more balanced and tasting experience. Enjoy!
