Today we are going to review a single-varietal feteasca regala wine from the Valul lui Traian IGP region, situated in the south-west of Moldova – Aurore Feteasca Regala 2022 by Fáutor Winery. Feteasca Regala (which translates from romanian as ‘royal maiden‘) is one of the most famous and sought after indigenous grape varieties in both, Romania and Moldova. It has been discovered near Sighisoara (Transylvania) in 1920 and is a grape variety that has been obtained by crossing of feteasca alba and grasa de cotnari indigenous grape varieties. It usually produces crisp, dry and very aromatic white wines, perfect for a warm summer day, but when handled with utmost care by a skillful winemaker, feteasca regala can result in refreshingly elegant wines that can reach into realms of excellence. But enough theory, that said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

Underneath lies subtle whispers of green fruits, reminiscent of gooseberries and asian pears, adding a touch of complexity to the overall aromatic profile.

Despite its crisp and fresh acidity, the wine displays a surprising richness, with a touch of alcoholic warmth that adds depth on the mouthfeel, leading to a zesty aftertaste that lingers with a slightly bitter touch, leaving a refreshing impression.

This is a wine that opens up with delightful floral notes. The palate mirrors the nose, offering a refreshing and zesty experience with a surprising richness. While the wine’s crisp acidity keeps the wine lively, it doesn’t overpower the delicate fruit and floral flavors. A touch of phenolic bitterness lingers on the finish, adding a touch of complexity. Overall, this is a zesty, fresh, and appealingly crisp white wine that showcases nice typicity of the feteasca regala grape variety. While it may lack a bit of finesse on the palate due to the slight angularity, its refreshing character and pleasant fruity-floral combination make it an enjoyable choice for those who appreciate a crisp and aromatic white wine.
