Tonight we are going to review a very intriguing wine that has a little secret – Ich Lüge 2022 by DiWinety. This is a single-varietal riesling wine, except it is not, as ipso facto, this is a single-varietal welschriesling wine. You see, in central and eastern Europe, welschriesling wines were often marketed under the riesling name, because the letter was considered a noble grape variety, was more appealing, thus it was easier to sell, while the former was considered something of a lesser grape variety, from which poor quality, often sweetened-up wines were made. Welschriesling (also known as wälschriesling, welschrizling, laskirizling, olaszrizling, riesling italico or italian riesling) has nothing to do with the great german riesling – this is a late ripening grape variety that can produce high-acid, gently aromatic white wines of good to very good quality, particularly in Burgenland (Austria), where it regularly makes superb, sweet botrytised dessert wines. It is also planted widely in Friuli (Italy), Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Albania and even China. Getting back to our wine, its name is in german (hinting at the german riesling) and it translates into english as ‘I lie‘, thus telling us that ‘I am not what you thought I am – a riesling, aye, but an italian one‘. The wine itself was aged for 4 and 5 months in acacia wood barrels of different sizes (300 and 500 liters respectively). That said and without further ado, let’s move on straight to our tasting results.

verdict: fine | highly recommended | a quite appealing wine of good quality

All in all, this wine bursts with an intriguing aromatic profile, showcasing a delightful interplay of ripe citrus fruits and subtle green, apple notes. The palate reflects the nose, with nuances of citrus and crisp green fruit flavors enlivened by an exuberant acidity. A touch of alcoholic warmth adds some depth, but the mouthfeel remains zesty and crisp. While this wine is undeniably refreshing, it lacks complexity, as it feels lean and zesty, and may appeal to those who enjoy a wine with a pronounced citrusy-zesty character.

Pairing: Due to this wine’s light body, zesty character, and pronounced citrusy profile, it would be perfectly suited for a thai green papaya salad (som tum). The wine’s crisp acidity will complement nicely the spicy and tangy flavors of the salad dressing, while the citrus and green apple notes in the wine will echo the fresh flavors of the papaya and other vegetables. This pairing would allow both, the wine and the dish, to shine, creating a refreshing and harmonious tasting experience. Gesundheit!
