Nestled in the heart of Vinho Verde in Portugal, the legacy of Casa Santa Eulália dates back to the 17th century. This historic estate, now under the passionate ownership of Maria Teresa Gil P. Cunha Marques Leandro, embodies a profound dedication to winemaking that has been passed down through generations. While honoring its rich past, Casa Santa Eulália has embraced modernization, exemplified by the recent restructuring of 38 hectares of vineyards and the construction of an impressive new winery. Designed by the celebrated portuguese architect Arnaldo Pimentel Barbosa, this state-of-the-art facility harmoniously integrates with the ancient cellar, a testament to the winery’s vision: to craft exceptional wines that respect tradition while leveraging modern precision.
Today we are going to review a quite captivating rosé wine from the famous Vinho Verde region of PortugalPlainas Vinho Verde Rosé Espadeiro 2024 by Casa Santa Eulália. This is a single varietal rosé wine made of espadeiro grape variety – a traditional red grape variety native to the cool, Atlantic-influenced regions of northwestern Iberia, particularly Galicia in Spain and Portugal’s Vinho Verde region. Known for its vigorous growth and generous yields, espadeiro naturally produces wines that are light in color, moderate in alcohol, and high in refreshing acidity. Historically, it has been used primarily for the production of delicate rosé wines, where its bright red-fruit character and freshness can be fully appreciated, although it is also occasionally vinified as a light-bodied red. While it lacks the concentration and tannic structure associated with more powerful red varieties, its charm lies in its elegance, drinkability, and ability to express a sense of place.

The secret to the pinkish hue of a rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes, namely in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color. The 2024 vintage benefited from the region’s Atlantic-influenced climate, therefore reflects a season dedicated to preserving the grape’s natural freshness and aromatic intensity through meticulous manual harvesting and cool, stainless steel fermentation, guided by the expertise of Portugal’s acclaimed enologist, Anselmo Mendes. Vinho Verde Rosé is typically produced from indigenous red grape varieties such as Espadeiro, Vinhão, Borraçal, and Padeiro, yielding light-bodied and refreshing wines with bright acidity, delicate red berry aromas, and a subtle spritz that enhances their crisp and vibrant character.

The Vinho Verde region, located in northwestern Portugal between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains of the interior, is defined by its cool maritime climate, abundant rainfall, and lush green landscape. The strong Atlantic influence moderates temperatures throughout the growing season, promoting slow ripening and preserving the naturally high acidity of the grapes. The soils are predominantly granite-based, often shallow and well-drained, which encourages deep root systems and contributes a subtle mineral character to the wines. The region’s rolling hills and varied elevations provide numerous mesoclimates suitable for both indigenous white and red grape varieties. Vinho Verde is particularly renowned for such grape varieties as Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Arinto, which produce vibrant white wines marked by citrus aromas, floral notes, crisp acidity, and exceptional freshness. These unique climatic and geological conditions give Vinho Verde wines their distinctive lightness, zestiness, and unmistakable Atlantic character.

maturity: in its prime | drink today or within the next 6 months
verdict: fine | recommended | a simple wine of good quality

Overall, this is  very appealing rosé wine, distinguished by its expressive fruity nose and a remarkably vibrant, slightly zesty palate. With its charming touch of residual sugar and a thin, easy-going disposition, it perfectly embodies the essence of a modern Vinho Verde rosé. This wine is undoubtedly in its prime, showcasing its full flamboyance and youthful vigor, ready to be enjoyed today. We highly recommend savoring it within the next 6 months to experience its peak freshness and aromatic intensity, as it is expertly crafted for immediate enjoyment rather than long-term cellaring.

This is a wine that shines brilliantly as an aperitif, setting the stage for a delightful meal, or paired with delicate seafood such as a zesty salmon tartare, grilled prawns with garlic and lemon, or pan-seared scallops. The wine’s crispness cuts beautifully through richer flavors, making it a fantastic match for fresh salads adorned with goat cheese or grilled halloumi. For a regionally inspired ‘wow-effect,’ pair it with Bacalhau à Brás (shredded cod with onions, fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs), where the wine’s freshness will provide a delightful contrast to the dish’s savory richness, cleansing the palate with each sip. Cheers!
