F’AUTOR | Fumé Blanc | 2015
sauvignon blanc
WineStatistics will be evaluating wines in no particular order on no particular schedule. Just stay tuned and you will never miss one. If the wine is tasted more than once, the rating table will be updated so as to reflect all the new impressions and observations. The logic is simple – the more we taste, the more we learn.
Tonight we are going to review a wine, we fell in love with for its expression of variety and for its winemaking style, as it is a barrel fermented sauvignon blanc wine – Fumé Blanc 2015 from F’autor Winery. Oaked sauvignon blanc wines are quite rare to find, especially here in Moldova, this is why this wine is so special. Its name is bottled history, as it was made-up by Robert Mondavi in an effort to increase the popularity of sauvignon blanc wines. He came up with the name ‘Fumé Blanc‘, derived from world famous Pouilly-Fumé region in France. But enough theory, let’s get back to the review.

Take a look at the tasting notes below and our detailed assessment of the wine:
Visual
Straw yellow color with shades of brilliant green towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with tropical and citrus fruits: melon, acacia, lime, pomelo, lemon, pineapple, mango, apricot, nectarine, daffodil, pear, apple and some nuanced hints of dried banana.
Gustatory
The wine is medium-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It feels oaky, expressive and elegant with a nuanced citrusy accent. This is a refreshing, bitter-crisp and quite extracted wine, with a nuanced woody profile and a bit tart mouthfeel. It has a fair overall balance and a very nice minerality and it feels a bit austere towards the end.
Aftertaste
It has a medium-plus finish and a spicy-tart aftertaste.

This is definitely a great Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 90.7 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far. Please click on the chart icon on the left in order to get to the wine rating page, where you can find all the wines we’ve tasted to date.
Conclusion: this is a fine sauvignon blanc, which is not yet on its top form, but is very close. Another 2 or 3 years of bottle ageing will definitely improve the wine’s balance, because at the moment it is yet too young, too spicy and too fresh. Our recommendation is to pair this one with some creamy dishes, like for example linguine alfredo or pesto shrimp pasta in order to complement the wine’s creaminess and to enhance those woody and spicy flavours. Enjoy it now or in 2-3 years, one thing’s for sure – it will only get better with time!
