Château Galoupet is a historic Cru Classé estate, one of only eighteen properties recognized in the prestigious 1955 Côtes de Provence classification. Acquired by LVMH in 2019, the estate embarked on an ambitious journey to redefine luxury rosé through unparalleled sustainability. Their vision is to craft exceptional wines that express the unique provencal terroir, all while prioritizing ecological preservation and biodiversity, as evidenced by their organic certification and extensive cork oak forest. This dedication permeates every aspect of their operation, from vineyard management to bottle design.
Today we are going to review an iconic rosé wine from the famous Provence region of France – Cru Classé Côtes de Provence Rosé 2024 by Château Galoupet. This wine is a harmonious blend of three red grape varieties: grenache, syrah and tibouren, and one white grape variety (rolle, which is the French name of the famous vermentino grape variety from Sardinia), where grenache forms the wine’s body and lends its trademark red berry fruit notes, syrah delivers extra structure, subtle spicy notes, and a touch of southern headiness, tibouren contributes to a pleasant warmth and adds earthy tones with a genuine scent of the garrigue (the herby scrub of southern France), while rolle brings subtle floral tones on the aromatic plane and a touch of elegance on the palate.
Rosé itself is a bizarre wine category, as it isn’t exactly a red wine, nor is it a white wine – it is something in between. The secret to the pinkish hue of the rosé wine is found in the skins of the red grapes and more exactly in the anthocyanin pigments. When making a red wine, the skins spend the entire fermentation in contact with the juice, for rosé however the process is shortened, for example pinot noir usually spends around 4 to 6 hours on the skins, to produce its trademark pale salmon hue, while cabernet sauvignon needs only a few minutes to make that rich, deep-pink color.
This is an emblematic, pure-bred provençal rosé wine that hails from the sun-drenched coast of southeastern France, benefiting from a classic Mediterranean climate moderated by the cooling sea breezes and the famous Mistral winds. The winemaking process is designed to preserve natural freshness and aromatic sophistication: the grapes are harvested at night to preserve acidity, followed by gentle pressing and partial maceration (stabulation) to enhance textural richness and aromatic intensity. Fermentation occurs at low temperatures, with the wine protected by inert gas throughout the process to prevent oxidation and enhance its aromatic intensity, with each grape variety vinified separately before blending them into this iconic cru classé rosé cuvée.

France is one of the world’s most influential wine-producing countries, with a long history of terroir-driven viticulture, defined by its wide climatic range – from the cool maritime zones of the Atlantic coast to the warm Mediterranean climate of the south. France is the birthplace to many of the world’s most famous grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc. Its wines are known for balance, varietal typicity, and a strong link between geography and style (which is called terroir), forming global reference points for quality across all known wine styles.
The Provence wine region, stretching along the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast of southeastern France, is famed for producing some of the world’s most iconic rosé wines. With a classic Mediterranean, climate, marked by hot summers, mild winters, and abundant sunshine, it is moderated by the cooling breezes of the Mediterranean Sea and the famous Mistral wind. The region’s complex geology supports a wide range of grape varieties, from Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, to Mourvèdre, Tibouren and Rolle – all of them key players that create the Provence’s world famous rosé wines.
Côtes de Provence is the largest and most prominent appellation within Provence AOP, spanning from coastal areas influenced by sea breezes, to inland hills shaped by altitude and stony soils. This appellation benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by the Mistral wind, which helps maintain vineyard health and concentrate grape flavours. The soils here are equally diverse, ranging from limestone and clay to schist and granite, each contributing different structural qualities to the wines. Rosé dominates the landscape, crafted primarily from Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, often blended to achieve the perfect balance between fruit expressivity and terroir-driven minerality.

maturity: in its prime | drink now or within a year
verdict: great | benchmark wine | a wine that has all the traits to become legendary
Overall, this is a full-bodied, complex, and exceptionally well-structured rosé wine – the epitome of a Provence rosé that masterfully blends power with finesse and delicate richness. Crisp and pleasantly seedy, with a ripe character that is just a tad rough around the edges, this is far from a typical summer rosé. Instead, it is focused around intricate nuance and a profound sense of place rather than simple varietal expression, making it a true crowd-pleaser and a genuine Cru Classé. It delivers a deeply satisfying experience, feeling warm and heady with a pronounced phenolic bitterness and a nuanced touch of alcoholic warmth that speaks to its depth and structure. Powerful yet delicate, this is without question a top-tier rosé wine. It is currently in its prime, ready to be enjoyed today or within the next year or so to fully appreciate its aromatic intensity and structural integrity. However, due to its inherent quality and balanced structure, this is a wine that can still be gracefully aged for a few more years under the right conditions, promising further evolution and complexity. Santé!

Given its bold structure and pronounced warmth, this wine calls for a pairing that can stand up to its complexity while allowing its intricate nuances to shine. For an exquisite complementary pairing, consider pairing it with a roasted rack of lamb with a fresh herb crust served alongside a pomegranate and mint couscous. The wine’s herbal notes will echo those in the lamb, while its ripe red fruit and citrus profile will beautifully complement the savory meat. The crisp acidity will cut through the richness of the lamb, and the wine’s pronounced structure and saline finish will harmonize with the tender texture and elevate the entire culinary experience, creating a truly memorable symphony of flavors and textures. Another congruent option would be seared scallops with a kumquat beurre blanc, allowing the wine’s citrus and saline notes to intertwine beautifully with the delicate sweetness of the scallops.
